Despite your opinion of Nicolas Winding Refn, the director's 1996 picture Pusher is a masterpiece! Now that I have made myself clear, let’s fast forward to his 2014 picture Only God Forgives...which was nominated for a Palme d'Or at Cannes! What!?

While the story's logline (a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death) is more compelling than the film itself, the camera work by cinematographer Larry Smith is a job well done.

Yes; the aesthetic can be defined as dull, colorfully distracting and at times lacking in originality. But the images and sequences are worth another viewing. It is no surprise Between Frames created “Shooting for Balance” a study of symmetry in Only God Forgives. Enjoy!
