ALL EYES ON NALIP

NALIP, which stands for the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, held their annual Latino Lens Showcase at the historic Avalon Hollywood nightclub. The mission of the org is to address the professional needs of Latino content creators. The evening celebration showcased the work from many Latino filmmakers and several Latin-American content creators beyond the states. Many celebrities were in attendance, such as Luis Guzman who was onsite to receive NALIP’s 2015 Legacy Award.

The showcase host's Reynaldo Pacheco (Roofers), Vannessa Vasquez (East Los High) and Jaina Lee Ortiz (Rosewood), opened the night with Industry Panels followed by Film Exhibition, live music and a lot of alcohol for the thirsty stars, starlets and yours truly.

The industry panels “Getting Projects Broadcast Ready, from Pitch to Distribution” moderated by Dawn Holliday-Mack, VP at El Rey Network, and “Creative Vision, Financial Responsibility” moderated by Labid Aziz, Producer/Exec of Two Rams Ent., was my personal highlight. Executive Robert Rodriguez of AUM/Aldamisa Entertainment and Paul Hudson co-founder Outsider Pictures shared several film developments and film sells strategies to get pictures made, bought and positioned into the market for mass consumption. An emphasis was placed on the importance of a strong story (product), name brand cast (promotion) and a bulletproof planning (marketing) in order to have a successful domestic and international exhibition run.

The Filmmakers Showcase presented in partnership with Time Warner Foundation, El Rey Network and the National Endowment for the Arts, among others sponsors, featured Angel Manuel Soto's feature film "La Granja." The feature presentation was also accompanied with five short films produced by several talented up-and-coming Latino storytellers.

I strongly encourage all living in Los Angeles to connect with NALIP, and to participate in entertainment organizations that highlight and support diverse content creators in media. Diversity in entertainment is extremely important to the development of our culture and our society.
